Electric vehicles are now mainstream and the way you charge at home can make or break the ownership experience. A dedicated home EV charger doesn’t just charge faster than a standard plug. It makes the entire process safer, smarter, and significantly cheaper to run. This guide covers everything Kent homeowners need to know before booking an EV charger installation.
At Switched On Electrical Service Ltd, our director Steve Meza has over 20 years of electrical experience. We’ve installed EV chargers for homeowners and businesses across Edenbridge, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells, Maidstone, Oxted, Crowborough, Caterham, and the wider Kent and Sussex area. Here’s everything we wish every EV owner knew before they made a decision.

When you first bring an electric vehicle home, the simplest option is to plug it into a standard 13-amp socket using the “granny cable” that most manufacturers include in the box. In a pinch, this works. As a long-term charging solution, it falls well short.
Here’s why relying on a 3-pin socket is a problem:
- It’s extremely slow. A standard 13A socket delivers just 2.3kW, meaning a 60kWh battery could take 26 hours or more for a full charge. A 7kW home charger cuts that to around 8–9 hours overnight.
- It stresses your household wiring. Drawing near-maximum current for 8–12 hours every night generates heat in the cable and socket. Over time, this can degrade connections and, in a worst case, cause a fire.
- Your home insurance may not cover it. Some insurers will contest claims for fire damage linked to overnight EV charging via a standard socket. A certified charger installation removes that ambiguity.
- It may void your EV warranty. Several manufacturers explicitly advise against regular 3-pin socket charging for this reason.
A dedicated 7kW home charger professionally installed on its own circuit with proper earthing and safety devices resolves all of these issues in one visit.

A home EV charger, technically called an EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) draws power from your consumer unit via a dedicated circuit and delivers it to your car through a Type 2 connector (the UK standard for all modern EVs and plug-in hybrids). Most domestic chargers are 7kW single-phase: fast enough to charge overnight, compatible with virtually every EV on the market, and suited to a standard UK domestic supply.
The most important distinction to understand is smart vs dumb:

Smart chargers connect to your Wi-Fi (or an integrated 3G SIM in some models). They let you schedule charging for cheap overnight tariff windows, track your energy use, receive app notifications, and integrate with solar panels.

Dumb chargers simply deliver power when plugged in. Cheaper to buy, but with smart EV electricity tariffs like Octopus Go now standard, you’ll miss out on significant savings without scheduling capability.

We only fit brands we’d put in our own homes. Here are the four chargers we install and why we recommend them:

Not sure which to choose? During your free site survey, Steve will assess your property, usage patterns, and whether you have (or plan to install) solar then make a clear, honest recommendation with no pressure.

The total cost depends on the unit chosen for home EV charger installation, where the charger is sited relative to your consumer unit, and whether any additional electrical work is needed. Here’s a realistic breakdown:

All prices include supply of the unit, installation, dedicated circuit, testing, and electrical certification. Everything is itemised in writing before we begin, no hidden costs, no surprises on the day. To understand whether your existing fuseboard can take a new EV circuit without an upgrade, our fuseboard upgrade guide has everything you need.
It’s also worth factoring in any remedial works your electrician recommends at the time of the survey, such as bonding improvements or upgrades to existing cabling.

The grant landscape has shifted considerably since the homeowner OZEV grant ended. Here’s the current picture for UK residents:
- Single-family homeowners – the EVHS grant ended for this group in 2022. No government grant is currently available for standard domestic homeowner installs.
- Flat residents and renters – may still be eligible for up to £350 via the EVHS, subject to eligibility and landlord consent.
- Landlords – the Landlord EV Infrastructure grant offers up to £30,000 for eligible multi-unit residential properties.
- Businesses – the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) provides up to 75% contribution (capped at £350 per socket) for workplace EV charger installations.
The GOV.UK grants page has the most current eligibility detail. We’re happy to talk through your situation at the free survey, no commitment required.

Most standard home EV charger installations take 2–4 hours. If a consumer unit upgrade is required at the same time, allow a full day.

Not always, but sometimes yes, and it’s important to know the difference. Your consumer unit needs a spare circuit breaker slot and sufficient capacity to safely accommodate the EV charger’s dedicated circuit. If your current fuseboard is full, over 25 years old, or lacks adequate RCD protection, an upgrade may be the responsible call before proceeding.
This isn’t a recommendation we make lightly, it adds cost to the project. But installing an EV charger on an overloaded or inadequately protected consumer unit creates genuine electrical risk, and that’s not a shortcut we’re willing to take. Read our detailed fuseboard upgrade guide to understand the signs your board needs attention before any new circuit is added.

EV charger installation has boomed in popularity, which means there’s no shortage of people offering it, and not all of them are doing it properly. Here’s what to check before you commit to anyone:

At Switched On Electrical, every single one of these applies. Steve is personally responsible for every installation, we don’t use subcontractors for EV charger work, and we won’t cut corners on testing or certification. Check our About Us page for more on how we work.

Can I install an EV charger if I rent my property?
Potentially, yes but you’ll need your landlord’s written consent and the installation must meet all standard requirements. Your landlord may also be eligible for the Landlord EV Infrastructure grant, which could make the conversation easier to have.
What if I don’t have off-street parking?
A home charger requires a private driveway or garage. If you park exclusively on the street, a home installation isn’t currently viable though councils across Kent are gradually expanding public on-street charging infrastructure. We can point you to local resources if that’s your situation.
How long does the installation take?
A straightforward home EV charger installation typically takes 2–4 hours. If your consumer unit needs upgrading at the same time, allow a full working day. We’ll give you a clear timeline in the written quote so you can plan your day accordingly.
Will the charger work with my car?
All the chargers we install use the standard Type 2 connector, compatible with virtually all EVs and plug-in hybrids sold in the UK. The only exception is older Tesla models with a proprietary connector though these can typically charge via an adapter. We’ll confirm compatibility at the survey.
Can a smart tariff reduce my charging costs?
Absolutely and it’s well worth setting up. Tariffs like Octopus Go and OVO Drive offer very low overnight electricity rates designed specifically for EV drivers. A smart charger makes this seamless by scheduling charging automatically for the cheapest hours. The savings compared to random daytime charging can run to hundreds of pounds per year.
